Particulate matter emissions in the spotlight

Environmental issues and particulate matter emissions caused by burning wood have been widely discussed recently. Particulate matter emissions caused by burning wood affect people’s health, but by burning wood properly, you can help combat climate change and keep indoor air clean.
Under the Ecodesign Directive (2009/125/EC), which takes effect in 2022, the environmental impacts of all fireplaces placed on the market must be given greater consideration throughout the entire manufacturing process. The goal is particularly to improve the energy efficiency of products. The Ecodesign Directive is part of the EU’s goal to reduce total energy consumption and, consequently, greenhouse gas emissions by 20%.
Fireplace manufacturers take emissions from small-scale wood burning seriously. Work to address the issue has been underway for a long time, and many innovations to reduce emissions have already emerged. With the IKON secondary air cassette developed and patented by Uunisepät, normal fireplace emissions from all Uunisepät fireplaces remain significantly below the requirements of the Ecodesign Directive. IKON comes standard in Uunisepät heat-retaining fireplaces, and an official emissions certificate is also included with delivery. Uunisepät ambiance fireplaces and Schiedel lightweight fireplaces meet the limits of the directive without IKON.
